The article is devoted to the Third energy package - a legislative initiative, approved by EU, which aimed in particular at boosting the competition in the gas and electricity market, which should cause the reduction of prices. The urgency of the topic is conditioned by existing challenges to efficient Russia – EU cooperation influenced by EU’s legislative reforms included in the Third energy package. Energy cooperation is one of the key areas of Russia – EU interaction in the area of trade and economy. European Union depends on Russia energy import for about one third of its total amount received from the rest of the world. EU is a major trading partner of Russia and it’s energy consumer. Therefore all the processes occurring in the energy sphere of EU are extremely important to Russia. The scientific novelty of the research lies in monitoring of the effects of the Third energy package on the Russia – EU energy cooperation. Scientific and practical meaningfulness of the article is in the considering the consequences of implementation of the Third energy package by EU members for Russia. The article addresses the first experience of implementation of the rules of the European initiative as well as the difficulties encountered with respect to new projects Russia and EU.
