Caesarean section(CS) is a life-saving operation. Given the increasing frequency use of CS, there is an increased need to study the possible health effects on women and children. One of the biggest problems that a newborn face after birth is the possibility of a transition from fluid-filled lungs to lungs filled with air in a very short period of time. Respiratory morbidity in newborns due to the inability to clear the lungs of fetal pulmonary fluid is common. Understanding the physiological mechanisms by which the transition from placental to pulmonary gas exchange and clearing of the lungs from fetal fluid occurs is necessary to develop potential strategies to facilitate neonatal transition and reduce the risk of respiratory morbidity in children born by CS.
