In the XX century. the Christian religion is gradually becoming the dominant official cult in almost all European countries. At its core, Christianity was a cosmopolitan force, a non-national confession of faith, but in the end it turned out to be adapted to the national characteristics of certain societies. it is no coincidence that in the early period there were already several national organizations. Analyzing the characteristic features of the Western European idea of humanism, the author notes that the main feature in them is their focus on the individuality of a person, its protection and development. The article also discusses the "Instruction" by Vladimir Monomakh, the work of Joseph Volotsky. The influence of the orientation towards active philanthropy can also be traced in the secular areas of humanistic thought in the first half of the 19th century. The experience of experiencing the facets of the sensual nature of this orientation is presented in the aesthetic humanism of the Russian romantics N.M. Karamzin and V.A. Zhukovsky. An analysis of the main modern challenges to man - the growing role of the masses and the associated threats of totalitarianism, the surge of violence and terrorism, the trend towards the formation of a global political system that suppresses the individual, and the spiritual crisis - shows that in order to effectively counter them, the morality of humanism must combine both historical type of the idea of humanism. To unite them, it is necessary to ensure the unity of their moral requirements. According to the author, in this case one can speak about the possibility and necessity to consider the spiritual and moral heritage of the leaders of Russian society, and more broadly, of the entire Orthodox humanity as effective arguments for a new impetus for the development of national moral life.
