THE INFLUENCE OF FREUDIAN IDEAS ON THE PLAYWRITING AND WORK OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS

The article examines the influence of the American Civil War 1861-1865 and the reflection of the lost generation of the American South in the characters of Tennessee Williams's plays "The Glass Menagerie" and "A Streetcar Named Desire". The influence of Freudian ideas on modernist writers is studied on the example of Tennessee Williams. The article analyzes the behavioral model of the characters in the plays “The Glass Menagerie” and “A Streetcar Named Desire” and draws a parallel between the unconscious, psychoanalysis and the characters in the work of Tennessee Williams, thanks to which we can see how the discoveries of the Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud influenced the culture and art of the 20th century. At the end of the article, the results began to be summed up and a conclusion was drawn why the plays of Tennessee Williams are popular not only in Williams' homeland and abroad, but also in Russia, he became a "national" playwright.
