The article presents the results of the research of the level of formation of communicative skills in children of the senior preschool age with general underdevelopment of speech and mental retardation. 40 children (20 with general underdevelopment of speech and 20 with mental retardation) were examined using the method ‘Mittens’. It was found that both groups are characterised by a medium-low level of development of communicative skills, with no statistically significant differences between the groups. Psychological and pedagogical conditions of formation of communicative skills through the prism of the Gestalt-pedagogical approach are considered. The necessity of creating a developing environment with an emphasis on play activity for successful formation of communicative competence in preschool children with disabilities is substantiated.
