Cinema as an element of propaganda in Japan in the mid-20th century

Shadiev Daud Hasanovich  (postgraduate student, University of the Humanities and Social Sciences, Russia, Saint-Petersburg )

The cinema of Japan is an interesting phenomenon in the history of culture and one of the key places in it are propaganda films. The twentieth century for the country of the rising sun is one of the most violent changes that have occurred in society. Society torn to pieces because of rapid industrialization and continued military expansion was on the verge of exhaustion as a human so moral resource. This led to the need for the authorities to form public opinion with the necessary response to the changes, that is - propaganda. And it was the cinematography that was the tool that allowed the most productive way to broadcast new ideas and manipulate information. Still undeveloped critical thinking towards a new kind of art gave the possibility of almost unlimited influence both on society as a whole and on the individual in particular. In this article, the author views cinematography as an element of propaganda in the middle of the 20th century on the example of Japan. The analysis is based on the research of a number of films such as "Five Scouts" ("Goonin no sekkohei" in 1938) directed by TomotakaTadzak, "Malay Tiger" ("Maray no tora" 1943) Masato Kogi, "Divine Sailors Momotaro" (" Momotaro: Umi no Simpei, 1945) directed by Mitsui Seo and others. These films are examples of the then existing trend in the cinema, which has become an instrument that creates the desired response to the policy of Japan in the population of this country.
