THE INFLUENCE OF STEREOTYPES AND PREJUDICES ON THE QUALITY OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

The article investigates the influence of stereotypes and prejudices on the quality of intercultural communication. Definitions of the concepts "stereotype" and "prejudice" are given, the reasons for their formation, their functions and their connection with the processes of socialization and intergroup interaction are analyzed. It is shown that stereotypes and especially prejudices seriously distort the perception of representatives of other cultures, interfere with an objective understanding of their motives and actions, discourage trust between the communicating parties. Specific examples of widespread ethnic stereotypes and prejudices are given, their influence on intercultural communication is analyzed. The authors conclude that it is necessary to overcome stereotypes and prejudices in order to increase the effectiveness of intercultural communication.
