The article analyzes the symbolism of the water element in Taoist painting. Various aspects and symbolic meanings of the water substance in the religious and philosophical teaching of Taoism are highlighted. A number of iconic works related to the direction of Taoist painting and containing "water" symbolism are considered. The main genres in which artists turn to the image of water are characterized. The conclusion is made about the originality and uniqueness of Taoist painting, which puts in the first place not the search in the field of artistic form, but the symbolic expression of the spiritual ideas of the religious and philosophical teachings of Taoism.
