This article is devoted to actual problems. The subject of the authors' research was the women’s Muslim movement in Tatarstan. These days, women’s movements are gaining in importance in society and dealing with a wide range of issues: economic inequality between men and women, gender policies, the challenge of preserving and developing the family institution, and many others. The women’s Muslim movement, particularly in the Republic of Tatarstan, is becoming an increasingly important feature of public life not only in Russia but in the world. Its main tasks relate to the preservation and development of national and religious identity and the need to build a tolerant society. The study examines the impact of the development of the secular education system on the women’s Muslim movement and examines the reflection of the growing socio-political role of women in the literature; the influence of Eastern and European educational literature on the formation of social and political consciousness of Russian Muslims is analyzed. Of particular scientific interest are studies of the influence of Russian feminism on the Muslim women’s movement of the region in the early 20th century, and an assessment of the Soviet and post-Soviet periods in the history of the women’s Muslim movement. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that, for the first time, women’s non-denominational and religious voluntary associations are studied in the context of the formation of civil society institutions, in conjunction with various social structures and socio-cultural processes in general. New historical and archival documents and materials are introduced as sources.

Keywords:women’s Muslim movement, Tatar feminism, religious modernism, educational ideology, national revival
