CHALLENGES OF TRANSLATING PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS IN THE ENGLISH LITERARY TEXT (BASED ON STEPHEN KING’S NOVEL ‘INSOMNIA’ AND ITS RUSSIAN TRANSLATIONS)

This study aims at conducting a unit-by-unit analysis of phraseological units from the original text of Stephen King’s novel ‘Insomnia’ with their Russian equivalents to determine their accuracy. Translating phraseological units has always been challenging for translators due to their historically and culturally predetermined unique features. Consequently, upon scrutinizing adequate and accurate translation criteria, the latter has been deemed more appropriate for the assessment of suggested Russian translations of phraseological units. The findings indicate that the most used method of literal translation does not always provide accuracy; therefore, a translator should similarly consider using either a translator's commentary or a descriptive method for a more accurate definition of an unknown to a reader cultural or historical phenomenon. Furthermore, the results of the analysis also reveal cases of omissions in translation and one example of an inaccurate translation.
