Melnichuk Marina Vladimirovna  (Doctor of Economics, Professor, Financial University under the Government of Russian Federation (Moscow))

Butenko Elena Yur’evna  (Ph.D. in Philology, Associate Professor, Financial University under the Government of Russian Federation (Moscow))

The article aims to reveal a problem of teaching a foreign-language written discourse as a problem of intercultural communicative activity within the framework of language teaching. The authors pay special attention to cultural linguistics as a scientific field which explains laws of language development in cultural context. Cultural linguistics studies language as a phenomenon of culture determined by development of society and human history and which contributes to the understanding of ethnic mentalities. Foreign-language correspondence discourse is shown not as a simple information exchange but as a dialogue of cultures. The work focuses on the linguocultural peculiarities of the Russian, British and American business correspondence discourse and conditions necessary for escaping communicative failures in foreign-language discourse. The initial thesis of the article states that educational potential of cultural linguistics is considered in the terms of creating knowledge for successful cross-cultural interaction. The choice of communicative strategy in written foreign-language discourse should take into account cultural values. Discourse competence building requires not only knowledge of a codified language system, traditional national culture but also taking into consideration modern social processes and attitudes in society.
