Machine translation and mental activity of students

Wide use of machine translation by foreign language learners has both pluses and minuses. On the one hand, its key merit is saving time and the capacity to handle very large volumes of information. On the other hand, this kind of translation does not stimulate students’ mental activity and their wish to study the lexis and grammar of the foreign language systematically and thoroughly. A raw machine-translated text requires post-editing that includes the knowledge of the system of the foreign language and the ability to formulate the ideas in the mother tongue.
