Imposture and pretence in Russia in the 18th century: problems of terminology correctness

The article presents an attempt of comparative analysis of various forms of Russian pretenders activities in the 18th century, examining the specific examples. It is clearly recognized that indicating related but not identical phenomena such terms as "imposture" and "pretense" are used as synonyms in the scientific literature. On the basis of archival documents stored in the funds of Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts and in the stocks of The State Archive of the Russian Federation, as well as published sources, monographic literature and scientific papers various cases of imposture and pretense in Russia in the 18th century are investigated to identify their distinctive features which prove nonequivalence of these phenomena. It is stressed that the elimination of the concepts confusion related to the history of impostors and the introduction of standardized terminology for describing the relevant phenomena may be effective means of cognitive process to produce the most appropriate pictures of the past.
