Sacred aspects of law codification in ancient Greece

Tarasova Liubov   (Kaluga State University named after K.E. Tsiolkovsky)

The article examines the mutual influence of the secular and religious aspects of the life of Greek polices in the archaic period on the example of the codification of law and the procedure of judicial proceedings. The author shows that the very category of Greek law was sacred, because the laws of nature and the laws by which mankind lived were established by the gods. When the law was codified, it was necessary to appeal to the oracles for obtaining divine sanction. Religious registration required a number of civil relations, including the adoption procedure, and magistrates exercising judicial functions were endowed with some share of "holiness". The author comes to the conclusion that the profane and sacred aspects of the codification of the law and the organization of the court in Greek polices in the archaic period are not divided.

Keywords:Ancient Greece, the codification of law, esimnet, litigation, Hellenes, religion.
