“Talfik Al-Ahbar” by Murad Ramzi & The Censorial Report by N. F. Katanov: Circumstances & Reasons of the Ban of the Book

In the article, the censorial persecution history of the historical writing of Murad Ramzi “Tafik Al-Ahbar” published in Arabic in Orenburg in 1908 is analyzed. Based on the archive documents of the Kazan Temporary Committee on the Print & Censorial Report (Review) Affairs of N. F. Katanov, which are stored at the National Archive of the Tatarstan Republic, the circumstances of writing the review that has become the reason of the author’s judicial persecution, arrest and seizure of the mentioned historical writing by M. Ramzi from bookstores are explored. The translations of the 63 “unacceptable from the censorship viewpoint” fragments of the two volumes of the books quoted in the review are subjected to comparative analysis with the contextual content of the writing “Tafik Al-Ahbar”. The analysis has indicated that the fragments chosen by the censor do not allow to reveal M. Ramzi’s attitude to the described events without context examination and need more thorough consideration. Moreover, this research’s novelty is also determined by the fact that some unpublished review fragments are quoted in the article.
