The fate of non-Muslim minorities in Turkey

The article deals with the factors which have determined negative attitude of the leaders of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey towards non-Muslim minorities. Although their legal status was thoroughly defined by the Lausanne Treaty after World War I, the policy of the Turkish leadership aimed at the transformation of Turkey into a nation state has led to almost complete displacement of non-Muslims from the country’s social life by mid-sixties of the last century.
