The main approaches to the study of English gerunds and gerundial constructions in modern linguistics

The given article is devoted to the main approaches to the study of the English gerund and gerundial constructions as one of the non-finite forms of the verb. The urgency of this problem is explained by incomplete knowledge of the language status and the principles of the investigation of such constructions both in Russian and foreign linguistics. The aim of the article is the critical analysis of the most famous approaches to gerundial constructions’ investigation. The author shows the pros and the cons of traditional, structural, functional, cognitive and corpus approaches. The subject of the study is the English gerundial constructions and the sentences based on them. The analysis is performed with the help of the structural analysis method and the method of linguistic literature analysis. At the end of the article the author makes a conclusion that in spite of the long practice of the linguistic analysis of gerundial forms, they still contain much potential for further investigations. In conclusion it should be pointed out that the results of the research make contribution to the semantic analysis of the English sentence and to the semantic syntax in the whole.
