Studying programs of pre-revolutionary grammar schools it is necessary to notice that most of all school hours in them it has been taken away on learning of foreign languages. In the curriculum of state grammar schools second half of XIX-th century on studying of languages about 40 % of volume of a school course were in total taken away: in a grammar school trained ancient - Latin, Greek and modern - to the French, German languages. Then by quantity of the taken away hours the geography, history follow Russian, mathematics. However, despite obvious accent in favour of arts education, would be premature to do a conclusion that training in grammar schools went to a damage of is natural-scientific and mathematical disciplines.
In given article such important stage of gymnasia life as examination in mathematics on the school-leaving certificate is considered. Examination in this subject traditionally was considered as one of the most difficult. In article the problems entering into the program of examination are analyzed, on the mathematician of grammar-school boys results of passing an examination are compared to graduates of other educational institutions and ex-sloes, conclusions of the experts checking examination-papers are resulted. And on the basis of this data the conclusion that, despite smaller quantity of hours on mathematics teaching, in comparison with humanitarian disciplines in a grammar school becomes, the grammar school provided the best preparation of pupils on the mathematician among all kinds of average educational institutions of that time. Therefore experience of gymnasia formation, in particular in the field of a technique of mathematical preparation of pupils, is of value and presently.
