The focus of this article are the books of Leo Tolstoy “What is art?” and “About art and literature”. The relevance of the sheet lies in the lack of research of the writer's views on art and literature, in particular, set out in his journalistic works. But also the relevance of this work is due to the fact that modern art and modern literature are experiencing a crisis of spiritual foundations, close to the one that was during the writing of the work under consideration.
