Bobokhonov R.   (Center for Civilizational and Regional Studies, Institute of African Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences)

In this paper we tried to study the problem of radical Islam in the Central African Republic (CAR) on the example of the Islamist group "Séléka". In recent years, Islamist groups have gradually begun to penetrate into Tropical Africa, trying to seize power in the states of the region, create an Islamic state and establish Sharia law there. This is a new phenomenon in Tropical Africa, where for many centuries peaceful Sufi Islam existed and functioned. Our analysis shows that with the advent of radical Islam, large ethno-political and sociocultural processes have begun to take place in the region, which affect all spheres of social activity today and in the foreseeable future.

Keywords:Séléka, radical movements of Islam, Islamism, Islamist group, Anti-Balaka, Central African Republic
