The stylistic functioning of codeswitching (english-latin) in an early modern english play «Magnyfycence» by J. Skelton

The research subject is represented by realizations of the code-switching phenomenon (English-Latin) in the text «Magnyfycence» produced at the beginning of the XVIth century by J. Skelton. The author reveals the pivotal sociolinguistic connotations of Latin relevant for the period selected for consideration. The identified instances of code-switching (neologisms and original Latin forms) are viewed at the semantic and metasemiotic levels embracing the data derived from diachronic corpora and context analysis. The obtained data are interpreted in order to define semiotic and stylistic functions of the incorporated Latin formations.
