this article discusses the role of the intermediary language (English) in translating shades of modality of other languages (Chinese, Spanish). Attention is paid to the translation of modal meanings while maintaining their original linguistic and cultural features. The speech is analyzed by the leader of China Xi Jinping at a meeting of UNESCO headquarters in Paris on March 27, 2014. The results of a comparative analysis of translations from Chinese to Spanish through the use of an intermediary language (English) and without it are presented. The authors consider how the category of grammar can influence the category of modality in translation, as well as the importance of using equivalent lexemes in translating Chinese verbs “给”, “让”.
