Retrospective view on the English clipping and their functional and semantic potentiality in the oral and written speech of modern native English speakers

In recent years linguists of all the world have paid their attention on the sources of the origin and the problems of clipped words functioning. Clipping, or abbreviation, is one of the most productive word-formation methods in modern English language. The clipped words are widely used by native English speakers and play an important role in the social, political, economic and cultural life of the English-speaking countries. The authors of this article dwell on the main stages of the development of the clipped words, consider the reasons for creating of the clipped language units, give examples of various types of the clipped nominations (apocopes, abbreviations and acronyms, blends) and analyze the features of their functioning in spoken and written English.
