The article is devoted to the current topic of historical names and self-names of Khanty clans and their origin. The article is based on the author's field materials, collected in settlements Polnovatsky Ob of the Beloyarskiy district, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous area – Yugra Tyumen region in the period from 1996 to 2019 and written sources. Ancestral traditions and legends allow you to look into the distant past of the people, it is better to study the features of life and everyday life, they are a vivid example of folk etymology, explain the origin or names of a particular genus, their semantic meaning, development and current state. Perform an informative function, have a real basis, a variety of topics, including mythological subjects, a kind of beginning. The most common are initials that emphasize that the action took place mătty jisăn, hәnty jisăn 'At some time, in a distant time'. The main characters are the ancestors of the clans currently living in this territory. The presented material can be a kind of historical source for researchers.
