The article deals with the speech act of disagreement in dialogical everyday discourse, which represents a negative reaction of the addressee to the addresser’s statement. The author describes the peculiarities of this speech act, with the classification of means of expressing disagreement being illustrated by examples. In the author’s opinion the main means of expressing disagreement are lexical and grammar (morphological and syntactic), direct and indirect means. The choice of one of such means in the course of communicative act is determined by the speaker’s intention to adequately express both his idea and additional pragmatic, expressive and other connotations. The analyzed examples from fiction literature let the author make the conclusion that the act of disagreement in English dialogical discourse is mainly expressed indirectly, which can be explained by the peculiarities of British speech etiquette.
