Memoirs of I.G. Tinin about the educational process in the gymnasia of the Russian Empire

The purpose of this study is to substantiate and formulate the problem associated with the presence or absence of the discipline "Foreign language (English)" in the programs of educational institutions of the Russian Empire through the prism of the memories of the specified author. To achieve this goal, the historical method was used, which allows, through a comparative analysis, to get acquainted with the educational process of the Sofia Russian classical gymnasium based on the testimony of a direct eyewitness. As a result of the work, conclusions were drawn that in the programs of Russian gymnasiums of the 19th century. English was not taught, which contradicts some other contemporary research on the subject. This proves the relevance of the work, which indirectly has a polemical character. The article proves the need to attract additional historical sources that verify the opinion of researchers about the place of the discipline "English" in the curricula of Russian gymnasiums of the 19th century.
