Transformation of architectural style in the Russian state in the pre-reform period

Skopa V. A.  (Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Head of the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies Altai State Pedagogical University (Barnaul))

The article deals with the transformation of architectural style in the Russian state in the pre-reform period. In the first half of the 19th century, colossal changes took place in the architectural practice of the Russian Empire: classicism lost its high position, giving way to eclectic architecture. Gothic architecture was opposed at that time to the worldview of classicism, expressed in the ideas of statehood. The architecture of high classicism of the first quarter of the 19th century ceased to be associated by contemporaries with lofty civic ideas. The first national style, which appeared in the 30s of the XIX century, was the Russian-Byzantine style. The spread of this style occurred mainly in church architecture. Favorable for its spread was the rise of national consciousness caused by the Napoleonic aggression of 1812.

Keywords:architectural style, classicism, Russian Empire, K. Ton, art, Russian-Byzantine style, eclecticism.
