America as one of the important literary motives appears in the work of Austrian writers in the first half of the 19th century. Ferdinand Kürnberger (1821-1879) expresses a critical attitude towards America as the ideal of state and social structure in the novel " The One Who is Tired of America” (“Der Amerikamüde”, 1855). The narrative at the beginning creates the text of urban New York City. There arises an association with the immense waves. In the author's discourse, spatial opposition is built - a huge space of the city and side streets, a habitat for ordinary people. The city is also the place where the dreams of the romantic hero are broken. An artistic and geographical image of an immense America also appears in the discourse. The strolling hero is in search of America's beautiful, untouched civilization. There is also a cultural and geographical opposition - nature and civilization. Kürnberger's implicit effect can be found in F. Kafka's text "The Man Who Disappeared" (“Der Verschollene”).

Keywords:Kürnberger, America, spatial and cultural-geographical image, land of promise, topos.
