Hedging reception in diplomatic English

the peculiarities of the use of hedging tools in diplomatic language is an actual, but little–studied problem in Linguistics. Its use in the diplomatic language is due to the desire to soften the categorical assessment, to reduce the responsibility for the statement. The purpose of the study is to describe and analyse examples of the use of hedging in diplomatic English. The article analyses examples of hedges in the speeches of British diplomats. It is noted that British diplomats resort to hedging primarily from the position of politeness, reducing the degree of categoricality, distancing themselves from judgment and evaluation. Various definitions and approaches to the definition of hedges are given, grammatical and lexical means of hedging are listed. Special attention is paid to the main functions of hedges in diplomatic language, they are used to express ambiguity, caution, indecision, uncertainty in the facts presented, avoiding harsh criticism or generalization. The main content of the study is an analysis of examples of the most frequent hedges used in the diplomatic British language. Considerable attention is paid to the most frequent means of hedging in the English language, such as epistemic verbs, modal words, indefinite complex-pronominal adverbs, modal verbs, conditional sentences, grammatical constructions of impersonal passive, introductory words and expressions, negative grammatical constructions, impersonal constructions such as "It seems/ appears". In conclusion, the article summarizes that hedge are a characteristic feature of diplomatic language, it is a tool with which they talk about the motives of other states, express a reflective assessment of the actions of other countries and doubt the impartiality of the position of representatives of other countries.
