Mentoring as a social institution has existed for many centuries and has acquired the status of a traditional form of work with young specialists. The current economic and political situation in Russian society actualizes the problem of mentoring development as a form of promoting social and professional adaptation and education of young professionals. The content of the article examines the evolution of ideas about mentoring, as well as the forms and means of its organization in the professional development of young specialists. The role and place of pedagogical support of a young specialist in the structure and organization of mentoring activities is determined. The external and internal barriers of effective mentoring activity are revealed
