The article deals with the emergence of a family "clan" of pre-revolutionary entrepreneurs Krestovnikovs, their transition from the peasant class to the merchant class. We present information about the early stage of the existence of this family, explain the origin of their surname. A special place is given to their confessional affiliation in order to exclude the debatability of this issue. Their place and role in the Moscow business community is briefly outlined. The factors of social mobility, which allowed them to occupy a high position in the merchant environment, are mentioned. In this work, we used not only universal methods of scientific cognition (deduction, induction, analysis, synthesis, etc.), but also the most important principles of historical cognition (principles of historicism, the principle of comprehensive study of history, the principle of objectivity, etc.). It was impossible to do without special methods of historical research (narrative, historical and genetic, synchronistic and others). This made it possible to make a critical analysis of published and unpublished sources; to adequately assess the entrepreneurial experience of the Krestovnikov family, to identify similar signs of homogeneous processes (objective prerequisites for the formation and development of the domestic pre-revolutionary industry), etc.
Keywords:“clan” of the Krestovnikovs, Krestovnikov family firm, history of merchant families, pre-revolutionary chemical industry, industrial revolution, social mobility, Krestovnikov brothers (“Konstantinovichi”).
