The results of the analysis of binary oppositions at the level of the chronotope and the system of characters are presented. It has been found that the chronology in the novel is described as the binary opposition between Bukhara and St. Petersburg, in the images of which the correlation of old and new, true and false faith is demonstrated. The characters in the novel have established complex connections, attraction, exclusion and paired interaction, which supports the complex ideological concept in the novel, in which a person seeks the true destiny and the essence of the spiritual world.
