SEMANTIC NATURE OF ATTRIBUTIVE NAMES

The article introduces the reader to the lexical category of attributive names. It tells about how the lexical category was singled out and reviews the scientific literature about the category. Various terms are given to describe the category and the optimal term is chosen. The article also outlines the author’s point of view on the semantic nature of attributive names and the classes of words that make up this category, discusses the semantic features of attributive names and different types of attributive meanings, the difference between a process and a quality, and also discusses the functioning of various classes of attributive names in the text. The properties of the components of the lexical category are studied, particularly the property to make up synonyms and antonyms and the property to vary in the text. The problem of the semantic centre of the lexical category of attributive names is raised: which attribute – verbal or adjectival – should be considered the semantic standard of predicates. The author of the article asks questions: what is the difference between classes of attributive names – verbs and adjectives, - and how verbal and adjectival attributes behave in literary communication.
