The article is devoted to figurative cohesion which represents the internal logical and semantic structure of the text in its image representation – an extended comparison. The lexical and thematic grid consisting of linguistic and contextual synonyms makes it possible to identify stylistic means that represent the image of the forest as a natural phenomenon, an enemy of man, a subject of transaction, a living being in John Galsworthy’s story “Timber”. Extended comparisons, metaphors and epithets made it possible to represent the author’s picture of the world of the English writer. Individual-author’s metaphor timber is used inductively: from particular sense to general (trees → timber), combining the text into an integrated scope. Metaphor timber is always in the consciousness of the reader in the images of maidens, diseases, and enemy. Stylistics means are aimed at creating in the reader an emotional perception of the image of the forest as a living person who does not forgive betrayal.
