ASPECTUAL CLASSES OF VERBS IN VERBAL PERIPHRASES WITH THE GERUND: A STUDY BASED ON THE CORPUS OF THE MODERN SPANISH LANGUAGE

The article’s purpose is to conduct a statistical analysis of the frequency of use of verbs belonging to four aspectual classes as part of the verbal periphrases with the gerund. The study was based on contexts taken from the corpus RAE CORPES XXI; 8215 contexts were analyzed. The results of the analysis, in general, confirm the theoretical hypotheses. The gerundial periphrases are most often combined with the aspectual class "accomplishments", since this class has the characteristics of durativity and dynamism. Nevertheless, it was concluded that the theoretical statement about a more frequent combination of the periphrasis "estar + gerund" with the class "activities" is not always adequate.
