The purpose of this work is to study the activities of I.P. Clapier de Colong in the field of shipbuilding. The article, with the involvement of archival sources and special literature, examines the problems of developing and introducing special devices in the Russian Navy to eliminate the negative effects of terrestrial magnetism on ship compasses. It is emphasized that the main role in this direction was played by outstanding Russian mathematicians and officers who made a significant contribution to physical and mathematical science and, in general, to the development and improvement of the fleet. While working on this article, a historical and comparative research method was applied. In the course of the work, the role of I.P. Clapier de Colong in the development of domestic shipbuilding was revealed. The results of the study served as material for further study of the role of mathematical methods in shipbuilding.
