THE WORD HOLIDAY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE (SEMANTIC CHARACTERISTICS)

The purpose of the article is to study the linguocultural characteristics of the word holiday in English language. There is considered the specificity of English heortology, the names of English holidays, their semantic and value characteristics. On the basis of lexicographic sources there are identified synonymous lexemes and their classification is proposed. There are analyzed idiomatic expressions, vocabulary associated with the names of various festive events.
