TO THE QUESTION ABOUT "PALE FIELDS" (BLEIKAR AKRAR) IN "ALEXANDER SAG"

The article considers a controversial place in the "Alexander Saga" – a translation from Latin into Old Norse of the original poem "Alexandria" by Walter of Châtillon. We are talking about the scene with the so-called "bleikar akrar". The author analyzes in detail the main milestones of the discussion that took place in the scientific community on this issue, offers his solution in the translation of this scene, explains the reasons for its appearance in the text, reveals the role of the Old Norse translator in the context of the plan. It is concluded that the translation of "bleikar akrar" as "pale fields" is unconvincing and does not correspond to modern knowledge about color designations and color semantics in the Old Norse language.
