PHYSICAL EDUCATION OF GIRLS IN ANCIENT SPARTA

The article examines the content of physical education of girls in Ancient Sparta in the archaic and classical period. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the sources, the authors conclude that the daughters of the spartiates trained and took part in wrestling, running and jumping sports (bibasis). In addition, they could engage in horse riding and hunting. Other types of exercises (discus and javelin throwing, fist fighting, pankration) mentioned by some ancient authors were not included in the complex of their physical training.
