Primary public education in Yelets at the end of the 19th century

The history of primary education in Yelets has been little studied by historians of pedagogy and is of undoubted interest both in terms of studying the issues of its origin and development dynamics and its influence on the formation of the cultural and educational environment of the city. In Yelets, they remember and are proud of the history of gymnasium education and the names of prominent Russian writers: I.A. Bunin, M.M. Prishvin, V.V. Rozanov associated with her. At the same time, the history of primary education in the city also contains many outstanding facts. The basis of this article is the analysis of Y. G. Gurevich's publication "Primary Public Education in Yelets", made in the journal "Russian School" in February 1892. It described the organization of primary education in the city and provided many interesting facts, such as the names of trustees and patrons, a description of classroom environments, teaching aids and library funds of Yelets schools. Of undoubted interest is the characteristics of the teaching staff of schools, the analysis of teachers' salaries, the expenditures of the city budget for the maintenance of primary education, the number of students and teachers, as well as the comments made by Y. G. Gurvich during the inspection, etc. Many of the facts voiced in this article are published for the first time.
