Zhu Biying   (Postgraduate student, Institute of Foreign Languages Nanjing University, China, Nanjing )

This article mainly analyzes the linguistic style of A.P. Chekhov's short story "I want to sleep". In our opinion, Chekhov is not only a great realist writer, but also an outstanding master of language art. He adhered to the principle of "brevity" and in the short story "I want to Sleep" not only comprehensively used various linguistic means, including words, types of sentences and other rhetorical tropes, such as comparison, personification and symbol, but also drew attention to the functional and stylistic coloring of the characters' language. That is why the tragedy of the little girl Varka is so accurate, truthful and convincing. Chekhov uses the art of language to form a kind of individual language style in the story "I want to sleep", which causes readers unique aesthetic experiences. He successfully formed the image of the girl Varka – an unhappy child from the lower class, and mercilessly exposed the dark social reality.
