The article focuses on the intertextual connections of N.S. Leskov's works and Russian classical texts. The notion of intertextual derivation is introduced, that is the process of formation of intertextual units and the result of this process, which happen when the one-word and bigger units of pretext (quotations) are transfered to the quoting text. Various functions of intertextual units are described, as well as the mechanism of inclusion and activation of intertextual units in Leskov's texts.
