The article, which continues a series of publications by the authors on the history of publishing in Russia in the 19th-20th centuries, examines the features of the development of music publishing in a competitive environment. Based on diverse sources, the role of music publishing houses in shaping the musical environment of Russian society is analyzed. Their importance in the formation of a separate market sector is noted. A comprehensive analysis of the factors that determined the development of music publishing in Russia in the context of non-price competition is carried out. The main priorities of the domestic music publishing activity in the period under study are determined and characterized. The rivalry of private music publishing houses with the Court Singing Chapel for the right to publish spiritual compositions is characterized. The specifics of problems in the field of music publishing in Russia in the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries are determined.
