PRECEDENT NAMES AS CARRIERS OF CULTURAL CODE: FROM A SYMBOL OF THE ERA TO A BAN IN THE NAME REGISTER

The article deals with precedent names that preserve the cultural code of a linguistic and cultural community. The author describes the mechanisms through which a proper name acquires symbolic meaning. Attention is paid to names with negative connotations related to politics, religion, history and crime: factual material demonstrates how such names disappear from the naming practices of different countries. A separate section of the article examines the functioning of precedent names in proverbs, sayings and set expressions. The author concludes that a precedent name serves as a marker of a moral value or contraxiologeme and acts as a means of transmitting ideas about the world from one generation to another.
